SDCC ‘26: Patrick Stewart signed Captain Picard Headliner card announced for MAGIC: THE GATHERING x STAR TREK deck

Make it nerdy! At the Star Trek collectors panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Wizards of the Coast announced the newest signed Headliner card that fans can expect to find in Star Trek x Magic: The Gathering booster pack: a Patrick Stewart-signed Captain Jean-Luc Picard card.

The Magic: The Gathering x Star Trek card decks launch November 13, 2026, and the crossover is leaning hard into 60 years of Federation lore. The set, revealed via a WeeklyMTG first look, arrives timed to Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary and pulls characters and moments from across the franchise’s eras — from Kirk and Spock to Janeway, Seven of Nine, and the ever-unsettling Borg. Per Wizards, “this set was designed by Star Trek fans, for Star Trek fans” — and the card list backs that up, with names like “Amok Time” and “The City on the Edge of Forever” pulling directly from classic episode titles.

The marquee chase item is a run of seven Headliner cards — hand-signed by the actors who originated the characters, with roughly 250 copies of each floating in Collector Boosters. It’s a first for Magic, transforming a booster pull into an autograph hunt. This far, three of the seven boosters have been revealed: Captain James T. Kirk, Captain Katherine Janeway, and now, Picard.

Booster fun, Trek-flavored

The treatments are where the fandom specificity really shows:

• Stardates cards — reprints of powerhouse Magic cards reskinned with Trek art. The showcase example: Sheoldred, the Apocalypse reimagined as “Khan, Engineered Evil,” repping the Kelvin-timeline Khan (the OG Khan gets his own card elsewhere in the set).

• LCARS frame cards — Starfleet’s iconic interface applied directly to the card frame, paired with LCARS shock lands — all 10 shock lands, done up as alien landscapes.

• Classic Enterprise cards — painterly, textured art aping vintage TOS movie posters.

• Scene cards — borderless, multi-card panoramas; four secret “scenes” are teased, alongside a revealed Janeway variant that leans noticeably more mechanical than her main-set portrait.

• Beam Me Up Bundle promos — Spacecraft cards rendered as ship schematics.

New mechanics, familiar faces

Mechanically, the set introduces Assimilate (yes, that means what you think — seize or deploy a creature, slap a +1/+1 counter on it, and turn it into a Borg artifact creature) and Face a Dilemma, which rewards making modal choices. The returning federation ability word cares about creature-type diversity among your non-Borg creatures, while Spacecraft and station — first seen in Edge of Eternities — make their way back for ship-into-creature shenanigans.
