LEGO officially reveals its X-FILES set — and Gillian Anderson approves

It’s true, LEGO Mulder and Scully are (finally, officially) out there! Cue The X-Files theme song.

Back in June, LEGO teased that a delightfully nerdy X-Files set was headed to store shelves as part of its fan-voted LEGO Ideas line. Now the set is official, and it arrives with a blessing from Scully herself, as Gillian Anderson partnered with LEGO to help unveil it.

“Seeing myself in minifigure form is both surreal and oddly delightful – there’s something very charming about being ‘miniaturised,'” Anderson said. “The whole set is a brilliant celebration of the X-Files, which I hope fans enjoy revisiting in this way – I know I can’t wait to put tiny Scully on my shelf.” 

As a refresher: the set traces back to this year’s LEGO Ideas “Build Your Nostalgia — 90s Throwback!” challenge, a follow-up to 2024’s ‘80s-focused competition. Fans were asked to submit builds capturing beloved ‘90s film and TV, and the X-Files entry, submitted under the username WetWired, took the top spot in the large-set category. The real name behind the design is Brent Waller, an Australian fan designer and 3-D artist who’s said the project started back in 2014 as a personal build of Mulder’s office and grew from there.

“I was obsessed with ‘The X-Files’ from the moment I first saw it in the ’90s. I originally built Mulder’s office back in 2014 while rewatching the series, and it grew from there as a personal project,” Waller said in a statement to Variety. “I wanted to combine nostalgia, detail, and storytelling to capture the atmosphere of the show – from Mulder’s office to the forest and UFO encounter. I’m thrilled to see it become an official Lego set and hope it resonates with both long-time fans and new audiences.”

The finished retail set clocks in at 1,478 pieces and stacks two scenes: a forest clearing with a hovering UFO on top, and a faithful recreation of Mulder’s basement office underneath, complete with an “I Want to Believe” poster, an X-Files dossier, a “The Truth Is Out There” tile, pencils stuck in the ceiling, and a wink at Mulder’s sunflower-seed obsession.

Minifigure-wise, the final lineup is Mulder, Scully, Walter Skinner, Mr. X, Alex Krycek, scientist Carl Busch, The Flukeman, and a grey alien — a slightly different roster than what showed up in earlier previews of the fan design, which had included Eugene Tooms and the Jersey Devil.

Anderson also stars in a promo short built around Scully investigating her way toward the set, and shared a statement about the experience of seeing herself shrunk down to minifigure size, calling it charming.

The set (21369) will run $199.99. LEGO Insiders get early access starting August 1, 2026, with general release following on August 4. Buy within that first window (through August 10), and LEGO throws in a bonus companion set, “Scully’s Lab,” free.

For now, it joins a lineup of Ideas-turned-official sets that also includes Wallace & Gromit and Godzilla, with the timing lining up nicely for fans anticipating Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot pilot at Hulu.
