Marvel asks WHAT IF…? JESSICA JONES got bitten instead of Peter Parker
What If…? Jessica Jones #1 hit shelves and digital platforms on July 15, 2026, arriving from writer Justina Ireland with art by David Messina, colors by Brian Reber, and letters by Joe Sabino.
The one-shot flips one of Marvel’s most-visited “first bite” premises: what happens if the radioactive spider finds Jessica Jones at Midtown High instead of Peter Parker? The book opens in flashback, dropping readers into the science demonstration that changed everything — with a teenage Jessica in the crowd alongside Peter — before jumping to the present, where Jessica has long since hung up her Spider-Girl persona to tend bar and keep her head down.
That retirement doesn’t last. A threat from her past drags Jessica back into a costume she’d rather forget, forcing an out-of-practice ex-hero to decide whether she’s still got it.
The creative team leans hard into Jessica’s established voice rather than recycling Spider-Man’s greatest hits, swapping teenage wonder for the weary, guarded energy Alias built her on. Lucas Werneck provides the main cover, with variants from Messina and Michael Gaydos rounding out the release.
What If…? Jessica Jones #1 is Marvel’s latest entry in the line’s 50th-anniversary wave of one-shots, following recent detours through the X-Men and Thor corners of the Marvel Universe.
