SDCC '26: Dark Horse brings back OVER THE GARDEN WALL art book with a decade's worth of extras

Dark Horse Comics is heading back to the Unknown. Ahead of San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the publisher announced Art of Over the Garden Wall: Expanded Edition, a beefed-up reissue marking the tenth anniversary of the original 2017 art book, with writer Sean Edgar and series art director Nick Cross set to appear at SDCC to celebrate.

Edgar returns to write the new edition, which draws on developmental material, concept art, and illustrations from creator Patrick McHale and the Over the Garden Wall creative team. The expanded book tacks on more than 30 additional pages, including a new interview chapter with cast members Elijah Wood, Melanie Lynskey, and Collin Dean, artwork pulled from the BOOM! Studios' comics line, concept designs for Mondo's collectible figures, and photography and preproduction art spanning the various Over the Garden Wall products released since the original book's debut. Cross has also painted new covers for both the standard and deluxe editions, and Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch contributes a new foreword.

Both McHale and Edgar sound thrilled to have the book back in print. McHale called the expanded edition a chance for fans to finally get their hands on the book again, "now in its new expanded form," while Edgar reflected on revisiting the show's legacy — from Aardman's involvement to the cast — as a genuine pleasure, joking that he and Cross would reunite in another decade "with long beards and lanterns of our own."

Art of Over the Garden Wall: Expanded Edition arrives in bookstores and comic shops on February 9, 2027, and is available for pre-order now. It'll be offered in a $54.99 standard hardcover and a $109.99 deluxe hardcover, the latter featuring a foil-treated cover, gilded pages, and a ribbon bookmark.

Fans at SDCC '26 can catch Cross and Edgar in person at Dark Horse's booth #2615 for a signing on Saturday, July 25, from 1–1:50 p.m. PT; a wristband is required to attend.
