The truth was out there—and now The X-Files has a full-season order, after a pilot that stars Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler.

Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler's long-gestating The X-Files reboot to series, Deadline reports. The order comes after the streamer greenlit a pilot and Coogler delivered it.

Three celebrity portraits above a Deadline headline: Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot picked up to series at Hulu.

Patel, an Emmy nominee, and Deadwyler lead the cast. The pair play two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they're assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to unexplained phenomena. They're playing brand-new characters, not Mulder and Scully stand-ins. Patel stressed as much when he confirmed the pilot had wrapped.

The road here was a long one. The reboot was first announced in March 2023, with Coogler set to focus on it after Sinners. Hulu placed its pilot order in February 2026, with Deadwyler attached first and Patel joining that March. Coogler wrote and directed the pilot, while Jennifer Yale serves as showrunner. Original series creator Chris Carter is on board as a non-writing executive producer, alongside Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media.

The pilot-first path wasn't a formality, either. Hulu also ordered a pilot for its Buffy: New Sunnydale revival, then shocked fans by passing on a series. The X-Files clears the bar that Buffy didn't; however, the fact that it needed a pilot to convince Hulu execs to officially pick up the series hasn't gone unnoticed by fans.

On Instagram, Kevin Kunze noted, "The fact they made Coogler shoot a pilot before picking up the series tells you everything you need to know about the industry right now."

It's also a homecoming for Patel and Deadwyler, who previously co-starred in Station Eleven. The original X-Files debuted on Fox in 1993 and ran nine seasons, with two more following in 2016 and 2018—meaning this is the franchise's first real swing at a fresh start, not another revival.

No premiere date, episode count, or additional casting has been announced.
