Dark Horse Comics has confirmed a new partnership with Mattel to bring Barbie back to comic shelves, marking the character’s first ongoing presence in the medium in three decades. The publisher made the reveal during San Diego Comic-Con, alongside key art depicting Barbie against a saturated pink backdrop, illustrated by artist Natalie Nardoza.

Details remain sparse for now — Dark Horse’s announcement, shared via social media, teased that more specifics would follow at a later date rather than unveiling creative teams, release dates, or story direction. Nardoza’s own enthusiastic reaction on social media strongly suggests she’ll have a hand in the project, though her exact role hasn’t been confirmed.
This won’t be Barbie’s comic-book debut. Marvel Comics published a 63-issue Barbie ongoing series from 1991 to 1996, making Dark Horse’s revival the character’s first sustained comics outing since that run ended.
With Mattel’s brand continuing to expand across film, animation, and now comics, the partnership positions Dark Horse to capitalize on Barbie’s cultural momentum, though how the publisher plans to differentiate its take from the Greta Gerwig film era or the ’90s Marvel run is still unclear.
More news is expected to drop as SDCC ’26 continues.
