SDCC ‘26: Prime Video sets October release date for Mike Flanagan’s CARRIE

“Are we witnessing the making of a hero, a monster, or something far more complicated?” That’s the question at the center of Mike Flanagan’s take on Carrie, and honestly, it’s the exact kind of ambiguity I’m here for. Prime Video announced yesterday that all eight episodes of the highly anticipated series will premiere October 7, 2026, streaming in more than 240 countries and territories at once.

The announcement came out of San Diego Comic-Con, where Prime Video kicked off its whole panel lineup with this one — no burying the lede here. The panel debuted the official teaser trailer, giving us our first real look at Flanagan’s take on Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel, and it’s chilling in the way you’d hope and emotionally grounded in a way that feels genuinely new.

What’s Carrie actually about?

This marks the first time King’s novel has been adapted for TV, and Flanagan’s version follows misfit teenager Carrie White (Summer H. Howell, cast after a search that reportedly saw more than 1,000 actors read for the role) as she’s forced out of her isolated home life and into public high school after her father’s sudden death. From there, it’s a viral bullying scandal, the specific cruelty of the social media era, and telekinetic powers awakening right alongside her adolescence — all building, across eight episodes, toward the single night everyone already knows is coming.

Flanagan himself closed out the panel, confirming the date and unveiling new key art with a nod to that prom scene, giving fans just enough to know the iconic beats are intact, just filtered through a new lens.

Carrie White just won’t stay buried

If it feels like Carrie White just won’t stay buried, that’s because she hasn’t — this is far from her first trip to screen. Brian De Palma’s original 1976 film, starring Sissy Spacek in the title role, is the one most people still picture when they hear her name, and it landed two Academy Award nominations along the way (this year happens to mark its 50th anniversary). There’s also been a 1988 Broadway musical adaptation (that everyone should see if they have the chance), a 1999 sequel called The Rage: Carrie 2, a 2002 TV movie, and a 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz. So Flanagan isn’t just adapting King’s novel — he’s stepping into a lineage, and this new series is banking on finally doing something with it that hasn’t been done yet.
